The three of us are redesigning the <a href=\"http:\/\/marsdd.com\/toolkit\" target=\"_blank\">MaRS Entrepreneur&#8217;s Toolkit<\/a>. MaRS decided to engage my team in a redesign to better leverage the high quality content the Toolkit currently provides.<\/p>\n<p>We started our project with a user research phase which had four key goals:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Usability: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What current issues exist with the MaRS Entrepreneur\u2019s Toolkit? What are current strengths of the MaRS Entrepreneur\u2019s Toolkit?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Context: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are users\u2019 general attitudes towards online learning tools geared towards entrepreneurship?<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Workflow: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are some past experiences users have with searching for resources online? How do entrepreneurs actually work<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Opportunities: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How could the online search process &amp; resources be improved?<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Process<\/h2>\n<h3>Data collection<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_539\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-539\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-539\" src=\"http:\/\/danielleklein.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Danielle-usability-testing-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Conducting a usability test with the user sitting in front of the screen and me observing\" width=\"450\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"http:\/\/danielleklein.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Danielle-usability-testing-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/danielleklein.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Danielle-usability-testing.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-539\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Usability testing the MaRS Entrepreneur&#8217;s Toolkit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Heuristic evaluation:<\/strong>\u00a0Each designer conducted a heuristic evaluation of the product to identify usability issues and compare our findings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Usability testing:\u00a0<\/strong>We ran usability tests on the toolkit with real users to identify usability issues and understand attitudes towards the product.<\/p>\n<p><strong>User interviews:\u00a0<\/strong>We conducted user interviews to research entrepreneur&#8217;s attitudes towards and experiences with searching for resources. Interviews consisted of a Q&amp;A and a show-and-tell activity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Analogous inspiration:\u00a0<\/strong>Analogous Inspiration is a method described in the IDEO Field Guide which involves designers immersing themselves in settings which resemble those of their users in order to better understand their experience. Each designer was assigned one or two analogous settings and provided with a scenario to research in that setting.<\/p>\n<h3>Research analysis sprint<\/h3>\n<p>To analyse all the data we collected, we held a one-day sprint to quickly and efficiently review all our findings and extract insights. <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/uxinthe6ix\/a-short-sprint-for-ux-research-analysis-9a4341f16b8f#.sropz42e7\" target=\"_blank\">I wrote a full overview of the sprint on Medium<\/a>. We then\u00a0looked for affinities among all our insights in order to articulate the key themes that emerged from our research.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Insight statements:\u00a0<\/strong>Reviewing our themes, we discussed what we found and rephrased them into short sentences. This allowed us to transform themes into concise, actionable insights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Problem statement matrix:\u00a0<\/strong>For each persona developed, we created several problem statements. These allowed us to articulate our users\u2019 problems related to our product.<\/p>\n<p><strong>User stories:\u00a0<\/strong>We next took those problems and, at a high level, articulated how our product might solve those problems. We did so by creating user stories using a table with two columns: \u201cUser should be able to\u201d and \u201cso they can.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Personas<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We translated our users into three personas. Almeera: Discovery and learning through the toolkit \u2014 Almeera has a business idea but doesn't know where to start. Using the toolkit, she gets a feel for entrepreneurship and identifies her first step: market research. Molly: Searching the toolkit for a specific resource \u2014 Molly needs to write a business plan and create a pitch deck so she turns to the toolkit to find information and templates. Hrishi: Creating a syllabus using the toolkit \u2014 Hrishi is teaching a workshop on entrepreneurship. The themes are: Localized Content, Latest information, Community learning, Industry specific content, Searching quickly, Startup philosophy, Quantitative resources, Credibility of resources, Needs depend on startup stage\" width=\"644\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"http:\/\/danielleklein.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/insight-statements.jpg 644w, http:\/\/danielleklein.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/insight-statements-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-586\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A slide from our presentation to MaRS showing key themes that emerged from our research<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Key Learnings<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Interviews are a limited research method.\u00a0<\/strong>In our user interviews, we combined the Q&amp;A with activities because <strong>research indicates that users can\u2019t often describe accurately how they actually do things.<\/strong> So interviews allowed us to explore users\u2019 attitudes about online learning in entrepreneurship and discuss specific instances where they used online tools; while <strong>activities allow us to see how users actually work<\/strong> when confronted with a task and understand their mental models when attempting to fill an information need.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Turn to digital resources like Medium, agency blogs and more to mix up your methodology.\u00a0<\/strong>We tried a lot of new activities thanks to resources from IDEO, Work Differently and more. We were even inspired to create a method of our own called &#8220;Themes Sheets&#8221;, <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/uxinthe6ix\/themes-sheets-lean-affinity-mapping-for-on-the-go-research-analysis-7b58b43dc22a#.lfgiw9dys\" target=\"_blank\">which I wrote about on Medium<\/a>, to allow us to map affinities among our research insights on-the-go.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Involve stakeholders through activities.\u00a0<\/strong>To get our stakeholders excited about the project (and keep them excited throughout the research phase), we made sure to include activities in all our meetings to break up talk time and engage them actively in the research process. <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/uxinthe6ix\/planning-a-client-kickoff-meeting-cbb6f7efac46#.ub23oq2tz\" target=\"_blank\">I wrote about one example of this on Medium when we used Product Definition Forms in our client kickoff meeting<\/a> to look for affinities and discrepancies in the way different stakeholders view the product.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Medium posts I wrote about this project:<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/uxinthe6ix\/using-writing-to-get-inspired-in-ux-project-planning-20eb878a44bf#.z4l0rj965\" target=\"_blank\">Using writing to get inspired in UX project planning\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/uxinthe6ix\/pilot-iterate-repeat-15984a78d356#.42st40mml\" target=\"_blank\">Pilot, iterate, repeat<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Next steps<\/h2>\n<p>This project is far from over as we move into the ideation and prototyping phase. In the next couple months, we&#8217;ll be using an Agile approach and engaging our users and stakeholders in co-design sessions to create a prototype and requirements set for the new MaRS Entrepreneur&#8217;s Toolkit.
