Danielle Klein

UX Researcher, Designer & Strategist

Currently, I’m a UX/UI Designer at FreshBooks in Toronto. I work on the product team, taking projects from research and prototyping to testing and designing shippable UI.

Previously, I completed my Master’s degree in User Experience Design at the University of Toronto. In my final year, I did a UX Capstone with the MaRS Discovery District and worked part-time with start-up Steadfast Beta as a UX Research Consultant. Alongside UX, podcasts, knitting, coffee and a puppy named Levi are a few of my favourite things.

I also previously worked as a UX/IA Intern at Nia Technologies, a non-profit start-up that uses 3D scanning and printing to create prosthetics and orthotics for children in developing countries. My projects at Nia included redesigning our marketing website and supporting a team from Usability Matters in Toronto with the design of a digital data sharing platform.

Before starting my Master’s degree, I was Editor-in-Chief of The Varsity, Canada’s largest student newspaper (2014-2015) where I oversaw 21 employees and over 450 volunteer contributors. I spearheaded several projects, including an overhaul of our magazine brand, changes to our business practices and organizational structure, and widespread talent recruitment campaigns.

I started working at The Varsity because of my passion for telling stories — but as I tried out different roles in the organization, I realized how much more there was to telling stories than writing and reporting. I discovered new passions: managing people, overseeing projects to facilitate organization-wide growth, and creating human-centred digital content.

To practice and expand my skills in these areas, I applied to the iSchool where I spent my first year growing as a designer and leader through real world project work. In my second year, I grew my UX toolkit in courses like Data Analytics and UX Methods, while I also put what I learned into practice through my Capstone project.

My UX practice is grounded in storytelling: I believe in creating products that make the user the protagonist, engaging in a clear and inspiring narrative. In my career, I hope to work with creative teams as a leader, making sure we get the story right by talking to users and meeting their needs.
